Characterizing the Role of Spatial-Temporal Covariates in Modeling Hydroclimate Extremes

February 27 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Virtual Event Virtual Event

Description

Spatial extremes of environmental phenomena such as extreme precipitation continue to be of interest, especially in the face of changing climate. Quantifying extreme events is critical in knowing their occurrence and intensity for early warning systems and preparedness. This session will review the technique for quantifying and capturing extreme precipitation’s spatial dependency and underlying covariates’ role using the North Atlantic (northeast coast) region as a case study.

What You Can Expect:

  • Understand the role of spatial and temporal covariates in quantifying extreme precipitation patterns
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the Spatial Generalized Extreme Value (SPGEV) model and the Extremal-t Max Stable Process (MSP) in capturing spatial dependencies and trends
  • Explore how these results enhance early warning systems, public safety and climate resilience

You may be eligible for 1 CPD hour.

He is a member of the Professional Engineers Ontario (P.Eng) and a Chartered Engineer (CPEng) with Engineers Australia (specializations in civil engineering, environmental engineering, leadership, and management).

He has a master’s degree in Soil and Water Conservation Engineering and a joint master’s degree in Geospatial Technologies from the Institute of Geoinformatics, University of Muenster, Germany, University of Juame I, Spain and the Instituto Superior de Estatística e Gestão de Informação, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Portugal; and a Ph.D. in Bioresource Engineering from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. He obtained a leadership principle certificate from Harvard Business School. Dr. Boluwade also holds an MBA in Policy & Strategic Management from the Lazaridis School of Business and Economics, Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo, Ontario.

Dr. Boluwade is currently an Assistant Professor at the School of Climate Change and Adaptation, University of Prince Edward Island. In the past, Alaba was an Assistant Professor of Hydrology & Water Resources Management at the Department of Soil and Water Conservation Engineering, Sultan Qaboos University, Muscat, Oman. He has taught Business Ethics and Sustainability Leadership courses across various graduate and MBA programs in higher institutions in Canada.

He conducts multidisciplinary and applied research integrating remote-sensed imageries in climate change studies to aid decision-making. Furthermore, he also examines the roles and implications of agriculture practices on catchment hydrology from qualitative and quantitative perspectives under a changing climate.
